Empowering Coaches Step-By-Step

Why Do We See So Few Single Wing Teams?

There are many answers to that question. For us Single Wingers, it is an advantage so few youth football coaches run the offense.
Here are just a few:

1) Most youth football coaches run the offense they ran as a youth or in High School or College. Most of us didn’t run the offense at any of these levels.
2) They don’t see it run on TV on Saturdays and Sundays.
3) They haven’t seen it run in their leagues.
4) Until recently there have not been any good resources to teach it at the youth level.
5) Many youth football football coaches don’t want to do anything ‘out of the ordinary”.
6) Most youth football coaches don’t want to take the time to learn something new.
7) If a youth football coach fails with something out of the ordinary it is his fault. If he loses using the same offense as every other team in his league, it’s because he “does not have any players”.
8) Todd Bross has an interesting theory that has to do with WWII players coming home and major media. It includes the crushing blow done to an NFL Single Wing Team in a widely covered game by a Under Center “T” team. His idea has merit as well, it is amazing how things gain then fall from favor only to return again at a later date.
