Empowering Coaches Step-By-Step

Last Weekends Coaching Clinic

Orlando Youth Football Coaches Clinic

Great clinic in Orlando last weekend. A very enthusiastic group of guys with the highest percentage of Winning Youth Football adherents so far (about 40%). Some excellent worst to first stories and the usual “yeah we had the same problem, this is how we solved it” stories. The knowing looks and laughs mean that as coaches we almost always experience similar trials and tribulations.

Old Friends

Great to see some old friends, coach Devo who I met two years ago at the Orlando Nike Coach of the Year clinic and have since exchanged dozens of e-mails with. I finally got to meet so many of the coaches that have been e-mailing me for the last several years. For me, that’s fun as so many of the faces just don’t match up with what your vision of what that person will look like.

Got to spend some time with my good friend Glenn who will be joining me this fall for the Husker- K-State game.  Great dinner with one of my closest friends Kevin Justice, Glenn and a coach from a Florida High School State Championship team. We could have talked football until 2:00 am, but the shuttle to my flight left at 4:00 am, so it ended up being an early night.

Jupiter Christian

Much of the dinner conversation centered on the amazing turnaround of Jupiter Christian High School. In the three years before Bill Powers took over, this team had won just a single game. Once Bill took over, the team won right out of the chute and has won back to back State Titles, simply an amazing turnaround. Where did Bill coach before he took over at Jupiter Christian? He is in private business and was a very successful Pop Warner coach. More on that later, we will be interviewing Bill in June when we are back in Florida doing a coaches clinic. Most of you will be surprised at the answers given to the following question: What were the top 5 Things Jupiter Christian did differently under Bill Powers that resulted in this amazing turnaround?

If you are like me, I’m all ears when I get to talk to a coach that has had that kind of success, where others have failed.

Florida in June? Where at and when? I am a first year head coach and I will be relying on your book and the DVDs I bought from you. I have been an assistant for a few years and we have been successful if you look at our record, but its been at the expense of the kids. I am wanting to make football fun again for these guys. Thanks for your time and effort with Youth Football.
